Senate moves forward with budget bill over Trump's objection
Republicans in the U.S. Senate appear to be ready to move forward with their presidential budget bill, despite the fact that President Donald Trump does not support it.
ABC News reports that "Senate Republicans are plowing ahead with their efforts to advance the first stage of its two-part budget package to pay for President Donald Trump's agenda."
Trump, as we will see, is on board with the U.S. House Of Representatives' version of the bill.
But, Trump had compliments for both chambers, despite is opposition to the Senate's bill.
Here's what is going on:
Trump has told Republicans in Congress that he wants "One Big Beautiful Bill" to financially support aspects of his agenda. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is pursuing this approach.
ABC reports:
The House’s budget bill . . . bolsters funding for the border and national security while simultaneously extending the tax cuts implemented during Trump’s first term and slashing trillions in funding for a variety of programs.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD), in contrast, is going for a two-bill approach, dividing up the funding.
The House version of the bill has already made it through the House Budget Committee, and it is getting ready to go before the full House.
The Senate, for its part, is looking to pass one of the budget bills, for border and defense spending. It is unclear when the upper chamber expects to put forth the second bill.
Trump weighs in
Trump posted a couple of social media messages recently weighing in on the situation.
In one, he wrote:
The House and Senate are doing a SPECTACULAR job of working together as one unified, and unbeatable, TEAM, however, unlike the Lindsey Graham version of the very important Legislation currently being discussed, the House Resolution implements my FULL America First Agenda, EVERYTHING, not just parts of it! We need both Chambers to pass the House Budget to “kickstart” the Reconciliation process, and move all of our priorities to the concept of, “ONE BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL.” It will, without question, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!
Trump, in a second message, had more praise for the Senate, despite the fact that it is pursuing a two-bill approach.
He wrote:
Thank you to Majority Leader John Thune, and the Republican Senate, for working so hard on funding the Trump Border Agenda. We are setting records, the likes of which have never been seen before, on stopping criminal illegals aliens from entering our Country. Put simply, we are delivering for the American People, far faster and, more successfully, than anyone thought possible. Your work on funding this effort is greatly appreciated!
From these messages, it would seem that Trump, at least for the time being, is happy with Congressional Republicans.
