Speaker Johnson suggests there may be a delay in passing key item on Trump's agenda

U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA), the Speaker of the House of Representatives, says that there may be a delay in passing some of President Donald Trump's key agenda items.

The New York Post reports that the item is what Trump has referred to as "one big beautiful" bill that would cover a range of items, from the southern border to tax reforms.

This, of course, will not be what either Trump or Americans who voted for Trump will want to hear. This is because Americans also gave Congress to Republicans.

Yet, according to Johnson, this might not be enough.

More delays

Johnson, during an interview that he did over the weekend with the Fox News Channel's Fox News Sunday, said that we should expect more delays from Congress concerning getting Trump's "beautiful" bill passed.

The Post reports:

House Speaker Mike Johnson admitted Sunday that the chamber’s GOPers may face yet another delay in drafting President Trump’s “one big beautiful” bill on everything from the border to tax reform. The Louisiana Republican, under the gun from some GOP senators to move along the bill, said the House needs more time to address the proposal’s details, since it’s so large and his majority is so small.

Johnson, during the interview, gave a preview of what to expect next.

"We were going to do a budget committee mark-up [review before floor introduction] next week. We might push it a little bit further because the details really matter," he said.

Johnson added, "Remember that I have the smallest margin in history, about a two-vote margin currently. So I’ve got to make sure everyone agrees before we bring the project forward."

The Senate has different ideas

In contrast to Johnson's House, the Republican-controlled Senate is trying to move ahead with Trump's agenda.

The Hill reports:

In a significant development on Wednesday, Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) revealed that his panel will mark up a budget resolution next week on the first part of its two-track strategy aimed at energy, the border and defense priorities, leapfrogging his House counterparts as the lower chamber struggles to coalesce around a blueprint for a single bill.

A point worth mentioning, though, is that the Senate is trying to take a different approach to the situation.

Whereas the House is trying to pass one big bill, the Senate is trying to pass two separate ones.

The Hill writes:

The contrasting game plans — the House’s one-bill track versus the Senate’s two-bill blueprint — have been simmering on Capitol Hill for weeks but are set to come to a head this month, an alarming sign for Republican leaders who are under intense pressure to unite and swiftly approve Trump’s legislative priorities.
