DOJ will not pursue charges against Project Veritas, James O'Keefe in Ashley Biden diary case

The Justice Department has just made a pivotal decision concerning an investigative journalism group's involvement in a case implicating Ashley Biden.

As Just the News reports, the Trump DOJ, helmed by new Attorney General Pam Bondi, has decided to bring an end -- without charges -- to a case related to efforts made by Project Veritas staffers to publish a diary belonging to former President Joe Biden's daughter.

DOJ makes the call

As the Daily Wire explains, it was on Wednesday that the DOJ revealed that it would not pursue criminal charges against Project Veritas employees who were the subject of a probe due to their possession of Ashley Biden's diary in copied form.

The probe of Project Veritas was initiated by the prior administration in late 2021 after journalists obtained the diary ahead of the 2020 presidential election but ultimately decided not to publish it.

Notably, the Biden DOJ went so far as to forcefully raid the homes of former Project Veritas head James O'Keefe and other employees, actions that caught the attention of civil liberties advocates who were concerned about First Amendment violations.

With years under the cloud of DOJ suspicion and potential legal jeopardy, O'Keefe, along with former Project Veritas staffers Spencer Meads and Eric Cochran, can rest assured that they will not be prosecuted in the matter.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York informed Judge Analisa Torres very succinctly, “Based on information currently available to the Government, no additional criminal charges are forthcoming.”

Reactions pour in

It was not long before responses to the announcement from the main players in the case began to pour in, with Project Veritas lawyer Paul Calli expressing relief as well as a sense of vindication.

“This meek letter from the United States Attorney's office for the Southern District of New York ends their attack on the First Amendment. I am grateful that our effort to protect the freedom of the press was successful,” Calli declared.

O'Keefe, while certainly pleased with the outcome, is hoping to force accountability for the strong-arm tactics utilized in the aforementioned FBI raids to which he and his former staffers were subjected.

The former Project Veritas leader stated that the DOJ informed Torres that it would release materials that were used to justify the forceful searches, something for which O'Keefe intends to push.

“We're finally going to understand what possible justification they had for taking battering rams to journalist homes, hopefully never again in the United States of America shall the U.S. government use the politics of fear to try to intimidate, coerce, and chill out the First Amendment just because you don't like the journalists and the stories they do,” he said, and that is certainly a cause behind which just about everyone can stand.
