Laken Riley Act on Trump’s Desk
On Monday, Donald Trump was officially sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.
On Wednesday, the House passed an adjusted bill from the Senate, sending the Laken Riley Act to Trump’s desk for his signature.
This will be a legacy piece of legislation for Trump, and the first true piece of legislation he will sign into law as 47.
Send It to His Desk
The legislation passed through the House with a 263-156 vote, passing in true bipartisan fashion.
Yet, we had 156 Democrats vote not to deport illegal immigrants guilty of having committed crimes.
The bill was named after an Augusta University nursing student who was killed on the campus of the University of Georgia.
She was murdered by an illegal immigrant from Venezuela, who brutally attacked her on the walking-running trail.
The legislation had initially passed the House, but there were some small changes made in the Senate, and it was then returned to the House for passage.
The original bill was written by Rep. Mike Collins (R-GA), who, after the bill passed, stated, "It's bittersweet.
"For a young lady that wanted to dedicate her career and her life to saving lives, now her name will live on forever and it will save lives."
Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.), who did not support the bill, stated, "Laken Riley casts out a net to cuff, arrest and deport people who have committed minor offenses. In that sense, it is not a good thing.
"Any discussion that should be had here around the issue of border security, around the issue of immigration, should include something on Dreamers, farm workers and families."
The congressman seems to forget that these people broke the law to enter this country, so they are already criminals from the get-go. Any crime, in my eyes, should result in immediate deportation, so he will not get a shoulder to cry on here.
