REPORT: Denmark Officials Privately Messaging Trump Regarding Greenland
Donald Trump has really been pressing the idea of taking over Greenland as a territory of the United States.
While Greenland’s PM has stated the country is not for sale, they are now interested in doing business with the United States.
This apparently has Denmark a little nervous, with reports now blowing up that Denmark has been messaging Trump privately to get Trump to calm down over his push to acquire Greenland.
Knock It Off
There are several reasons that Trump wants to acquire Greenland, and while I understand his narrative, I don’t necessarily support it.
Denmark is a military strategic point as well as being mineral-rich, but I think we can do business with them while not taking the country on as another territory that will bleed the nation dry.
Trump has hinted that he could use the military to “coerce” this, but I don’t see Trump going to war with the Danes over this (the Danish government is responsible for defending Greenland).
The Danes want to avoid any conflict with the United States, so reports have recently surfaced that Danish officials have reached out in backchannels to Trump officials for more clarity on what Trump was suggesting.
Many in the EU see Denmark as the biggest ally that the United States has in the EU, so they are baffled as to why Trump would pick this fight.
Greenland has been under the thumb of Denmark for three centuries and has been a self-governing territory since 1953.
Greenland’s prime minister, Múte Egede, has expressed interest in working with Trump, but Egede has been adamant that Greenland is not for sale, stating, “We are ready to talk. Cooperation is about dialogue. Cooperation means that you will work towards solutions.”
I do not believe this will happen, and I think this is just posturing by Trump to secure a better deal regarding our military base in Greenland as well as being able to secure those minerals at a reasonable price.
Do you think there's any possibility America could actually buy Greenland?
