Michelle Obama skips Jimmy Carter funeral

Former First Lady Michelle Obama decided to skip the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter.

Instead, Breitbart News reports that Obama merely released a message saying that her "thoughts and prayers" are with the Carter family.

This has come as a surprise to many as the funeral was filled with current and former heads of state, including Obama's husband, former President Barack Obama.

As we will see, President-Elect Donald Trump and incoming First Lady Melania Trump were both there, and Trump set the internet on fire with gossip after he was seen chatting with Obama.

"Thoughts and prayers"

So, what was so important that caused Michelle Obama to skip Carter's funeral? This is the question, and the answer, so far, is not exactly clear.

Journalist Jeff Zeleny told CNN that the former first lady had "scheduling conflicts." He claimed to get this information from "her advisors." Zeleny told the outlet, "She's still in Hawaii."

What exactly kept Obama in Hawaii, though, has not been reported.

Politico released the statement that Obama's spokesperson, Crystal Carson, released - the one in which she sent her "thoughts and prayers" to the Carter family.

The statement reads:

Mrs. Obama sends her thoughts and prayers to the Carter family, and everyone who loved and learned from the remarkable former President.

Obama and Trump chat it up

Both Trump and Barack Obama attended the Carter funeral on Thursday, and it just so happened that they sat next to each other. Not only that - but despite their political differences - it appeared as though both men decided to have a cordial conversation. Take a look:

This video has gone viral on the internet, with many wanting to know what exactly the two men were chatting about. We do not know the answer to this, but the New York Post has used a lip reader to figure some of it out.

Per the outlet:

Trump, 78, possibly wary of cameras facing the pair as they sat shoulder to shoulder, cautioned Obama, 63, that they would have to “find a quiet place” later in the day to discuss a “matter of importance,” according to forensic lip reader Jeremy Freeman. It’s unclear what precisely that conversation would entail, but Freeman’s translation indicated that Obama and Trump may have been discussing international agreements.

The Post's lip reader goes on to provide specific statements made by each man. In today's political climate, it was a rare sight, to say the least.
