Johnson Sets Expectations High on Passing Trump’s Agenda
Well, it would appear that Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is already going back on his word to the American people and the GOP caucus.
A major sticking point for the caucus is omnibus legislation.
Yet, with that being the only option to push through Trump’s agenda, that is what Johnson plans on using to ram through the agenda by the summer.
One Big Beautiful Bill
All during Biden’s administration, Republicans screamed at the top of their lungs over Democrats using reconciliation in omnibus spending bills to ram through Biden’s agenda.
Well, they are about to do the same thing, so I am curious to see how this will play, especially among Freedom Caucus members who were adamant they wanted single-issue legislation, especially when it came to spending bills.
On Sunday, Johnson confirmed this is how the GOP will push through Trump’s agenda, stating, “We’re 15 days out from the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump for his second term. And we want to make sure that we’re jump-starting the agenda now over the next two weeks, so that he’s prepared and ready on day one.
“We have a lot to do, as you know. And we have been putting all the plays together and figuring out the sequence of how we’re going to run those plays. And we’re really excited about it.
“At the end of the day, President Trump is going to prefer, as he likes to say, one big, beautiful bill. And there’s a lot of merit to that, because we can put it all together, one big up-or-down vote, which can save the country, quite literally, because there are so many elements to it. And it’ll give us a little bit more time to negotiate that and get it right.”
So, if we make the assumption that the upcoming special elections will play out along party lines, this will mean the GOP will not need any Democrat votes to get this legislation passed.
However, they will need every member of the GOP to support the legislation, and that could be a problem.
Remember, you had a significant group of House members run on blocking omnibus legislation.
In the Senate, you have people like Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), who will not support large spending bills that are not completely funded.
So, Johnson and Trump are now forcing these elected officials to go back against their word to their constituents to get this legislation passed.
And trust me, I understand why they are doing this, but they just spent the last four years complaining about reconciliation, only to use it the first chance they get.
It’s business as usual in DC, and it always will be. But worse, this is creating an attack ad for Democrats to use against the GOP for mid-term elections.
Trump and Johnson literally have no room for error, so we can only hope that Johnson is right and they can deliver on everything they are promising.
