Top Republican Calls for Party to Question Leadership
If we are being honest, Speaker Johnson (R-LA) has never really had the full support of the Caucus since taking over.
Almost immediately, he caved to Dems, and the last spending bill was complete and utter chaos.
Now, some very big voices in the GOP are questioning if Johnson is the right man for the job with a razor-thin majority in the House heading into Trump’s second term.
Right Man for the Job
House Freedom Caucus Chair Andy Harris (R-MD) is among those questioning if the party needs to remove Johnson from leadership.
He stated, “Before the last couple of weeks, I was in his corner, but now we should consider what’s the best path forward.
“We do need to consider whether — if we’re going to advance Mr. Trump’s agenda — whether the current leadership is what we need.”
House leadership has been a mess since McCarthy took over as Speaker, having been ousted by then-Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
After several nominees were blocked, Johnson appeared to be the middle ground for everyone, but he needed to prove himself, and he has not done that at all.
For my money, Johnson has no backbone and has been too willing to cave to Democrats on their demands.
Now, in this type of situation, I get that some concessions will have to be made, especially when the entire GOP is not on the same page, but Johnson has been giving up far too much, at least in my opinion.
Johnson is also facing challenges from Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), not to mention several GOP Senators speaking out against him, as well as Trump being rumored to not be happy with him for not including a debt ceiling suspension in the bill so it would be on record as having happened under Biden.
I think Johnson gets bullied, including by Trump, and he just does not have the makeup for leadership.
But then the question becomes who that person will be. With Trump coming into office, he will not back anyone unless he knows he can push them around.
My fear now is that 2022 will repeat itself, which would be a huge problem in terms of certifying the election.
There are some Democrats cooking up ways to prevent Trump from taking office, but if this keeps up, it could be the GOP that delays Trump getting the keys to the White House.
