Republican report suggests Liz Cheney violated law while on House Jan. 6 panel
Former Rep. Liz Cheney became something of a folk hero on the left over the past few years, first for her role in the House Jan. 6 Committee and later for her vigorous endorsement of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign.
However, according to a Republican-led report issued on Tuesday, Cheney likely committed violations of “numerous federal laws” in connection with her Jan. 6 panel involvement, as the Daily Mail explains, with some suggesting that he has significant criminal exposure for witness tampering.
Damning report emerges
Leading the charge in terms of the recent House Administration Subcommittee on Oversight report was Rep. Barry Loudermilk of Georgia, and he has held little back when it comes to his thoughts on Cheney's conduct and that of the rest of the now-defunct Jan. 6 panel.
“Speaker Pelosi's multimillion-dollar Select Committee was a political weapon with a singular focus to deceive the public into blaming President Trump for the violence on January 6 and to tarnish the legacy of his first Presidency,” the report declared.
According to Loudermilk, the committee's conduct was engineered to produce a certain outcome, and now that the dust has settled, individuals such as Cheney ought to be criminally investigated.
“Based on the evidence obtained by this Subcommittee, numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, the former Vice Chair of the January 6 Select Committee, and these violations should be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation,” his report further stated.
Specifically, the report outlines claims that Cheney wrongfully collaborated with former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson to steer her testimony in such a way as to tar Trump, doing so “without Hutchinson's attorney's knowledge.”
Reactions pour in
Cheney did not take long to respond to the report, contending that it “intentionally disregards the truth” and ignores what she says is the “tremendous weight of evidence” against Trump.
She added, “January 6th showed Donald Trump for who he really is. He watched television and refused for hours to instruct his supporters to stand down and leave” the Capitol.
Cheney went on, “Their allegations do not reflect a review of the actual evidence and are a malicious and cowardly assault on the truth. No reputable lawyer, legislator or judge would take this seriously.”
Trump, unsurprisingly, views things rather differently, as The Hill reports, saying this week, “Liz Cheney could be in a lot of trouble based on the evidence obtained by the subcommittee, which states that 'numerous federal laws were likely broken by Liz Cheney, and those violations should be investigated by the FBI.'”
As the incoming Trump administration begins to prioritize areas of investigation and concern, it remains to be seen whether Cheney's alleged misconduct will rise to the top of the list.
