Tex Rep.’s Daughter Dies in Her Sleep Only Weeks Before Father Retires

There are heavy hearts in the state of Texas today.

Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX) announced on Monday that his oldest daughter, Christine, had passed away in her sleep over the weekend.

Burgess is set to retire at the end of this term.

Heartbreaking News

They say the toughest thing for any parent to have to do is bury their child.

Sadly, as Burgess was set to retire to be able to enjoy his family more, his eldest daughter passed away.

No details were given regarding her cause of death.

The statement on her death stated, "Congressman Burgess appreciates all of the thoughts & prayers & respectfully requests privacy for his family at this difficult time.”

The condolences poured in from Congress.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) stated, "It is with deep sadness that we share the tragic news about the passing of Congressman Burgess' beloved daughter, Christine.

"Our hearts and our prayers go out to our dear friend and colleague and his family at this very difficult time."

Rep. Troy Nehls (R-TX) added, "Jill and I are saddened to learn of the passing of @michaelcburgess’s daughter, Christine. Please join us in praying for the entire Burgess family during this incredibly difficult time.”

Burgess has been in office since 2003, figuring those 11 terms were long enough.

On December 5, the House Rules Committee honored Burgess with the unveiling of his House photo.

At the time, he stated, “I am beyond grateful and honored for the opportunity of a lifetime to serve as the Representative of the 26th Congressional District for the past 22 years.

“Reflecting on my time in Congress, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation for the people that surrounded me and the impactful legacy we have created together for North Texans."

Our thoughts are with your family, sir. May your daughter rest in peace.
