South Korean President’s Chief of Staff Resigns
South Korea is in complete turmoil right now, and the situation just got a little worse.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol recently declared martial law, claiming that opposition was going to collapse the government.
His decree was reversed by his cabinet, and then his Chief of Staff resigned from his post.
I’m Done
Once Yoon declared martial law, his allies could not get away from him quickly enough.
The move was criticized all around, with Yoon insisting that he was only doing this to protect his nation.
Yoon stated, "The handling of the national budget also cut all major budgets to have control over the essential functions of the state, the budget that was formed to crack down on drug crimes and maintain public security.
“This undermines the essential functions of the state and leaves the public in a drug paradise and public security panic.
"The National Assembly, which should be the basis of liberal democracy, has become a monster that collapses the liberal democracy system.”
His cabinet quickly moved to reverse the order, which was followed by the South Korean State Council passing a resolution on the matter.
That done, numerous members of the administration resigned or announced their intent to resign, hoping to immediately cut all ties to Yoon.
Among those resignations was that of Presidential Chief of Staff Jeong Jin-seok.
The White House was shockingly quiet throughout this process, only reacting after the martial law decree had been lifted.
The White House then stated, "We are relieved President Yoon has reversed course on his concerning declaration of martial law and respected the ROK National Assembly's vote to end it.
“Democracy is at the foundation of the U.S.-ROK alliance, and we will continue to monitor the situation."
This is just one more black mark on Biden’s foreign policy record as president, as he was seemingly unaware anything was going on until well after the fact.
As I have said before, January cannot come soon enough.
