Trump Labor Pick Applauded by Unions

Typically, a Republican Secretary of Labor would be looking to push back against organized labor, but that will not be the case with Trump’s nominee.

Trump recently announced that Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR) would be his nominee as Labor Secretary.

The announcement was applauded by organized labor while creating a bit of a panic among business owners.

Moving Left

This appointment is considered a win for organized labor, with Chavez-DeRemer one of only a handful of Republicans who have supported the PRO Act, which boosted workers organizing rights while trying to crush gig workers.

She also sponsored her own pro-union legislation, which, coincidentally, shredded Project 2025.

Arthur Wheaton, director of labor studies at the Cornell School of Industrial and Labor Relations’s Buffalo Co-Lab, believes this shows that Trump is making a lunge left in terms of organized labor.

He stated, “Trump has been very transactional.

“Labor, in some small part, helped him get across the finish line, and he took the advice from Sean O’Brien. … I think that’s who was whispering in his ear.”

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten applauded the appointment, stating, “Her record suggests real support of workers and their right to unionize. I hope it means the Trump [administration] will actually respect collective bargaining and workers’ voices from Teamsters to teachers.”

Teamsters boss Sean O’Brien also seemed happy, posting, “North America’s strongest union is ready to work with you every step of the way.”

It will be interesting to see how organized labor responds if Chavez-DeRemer does in fact help unions become stronger during this administration.

Will these unions continue to dump cash into Democrat campaigns, or will they back off and give the GOP a chance again in 2028?

Trump has supported the right of American workers to negotiate a fair wage, and I fully support that.

My biggest problem with unions is the corruption and money that is funneled to unions to save their pensions due to mismanagement, while at the same time, the unions turn around and donate our taxpayer dollars right back to politicians.

Until that problem is fixed, there is simply no way I can support anything that is pro-union.

To that very point, look no further than the money spent by Chavez-DeRemer on 5-star hotels and limos during her re-election campaign.

She blew nearly $60,000 in limo and chauffeur services as well as hotel stays, such as the Ritz Carlton and suites at casinos.

If her idea of helping labor is to funnel money to them so they can lavishly spend it, I will go after her and Trump for appointing her with everything I have.

If Trump can get labor on his side, great, but he cannot do so by using the same playbook that Democrats have used to lure them in for decades. That, my friends, is simply unacceptable.
