Trump threatens to put 100% tariff on BRICS countries

President-Elect Donald Trump just threatened to place a "100% tariff" on BRICS countries.

Trump did so in a message that he posted to his Truth Social account over the weekend.

In the message, Trump made it clear that, under his watch, he will not allow these countries to try to move away from the U.S. dollar without penalty.

"100% Tariffs"

Trump began his message by writing, "The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER."

The president-elect went on to explain how things will be under his watch.

"We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy," Trump wrote.

He added, "They can go find another 'sucker!' There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.

That settles that.

Background

For those unfamiliar with "BRICS" countries, they are Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. As you can see, "BRICS" is an acronym.

The Daily Caller explains:

After Russia faced global sanctions for its war with Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly hoped to position BRICS — which has expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates — as an alternative platform for international payments . . .

In the months leading up to the 2024 election, Trump made it clear that, if elected, he would use tariffs as a threat in negotiations with other countries. Trump has already put this idea into action, threatening to impose tariffs not just on BRICS countries but on Mexico and Canada as well.

The Daily Caller reports:

Earlier this month, Trump hit the ground running by threatening to impose a 25% tariff on all Mexican and Canadian goods until their governments take action to limit the onslaught of drugs and illegal migrants entering the U.S.

The move already appears to be forcing concessions from these countries.
