Trump vows 100% tariffs on countries attempting to replace US dollar in international trade
Before he even takes office in January, President-elect Donald Trump is already staking out hardline positions with many foreign leaders in an effort to further his “America First” agenda.
Most recently, Trump threatened to impose staggering tariffs on any of the nations currently contemplating a move away from the U.S. dollar in the realm of international trade, as Fox Business reports.
Trump targets BRICS nations
On Saturday, Trump declared that there would be 100% tariffs placed on the group of nations referred to as BRICS, should they attempt to replace the dollar as the primary vehicle for international trading.
The BRICS nations as currently comprised, include Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates.
Explaining his views on his Truth Social platform, Trump said, “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar while we stand by and watch is OVER.”
He went on, “We require a commitment from these Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty U.S. Dollar or, they will face 100% Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful U.S. Economy.”
Adding further emphasis to his point, Trump said, “They can go find another 'sucker!' There is no chance that the BRICS will replace the U.S. Dollar in International Trade, and any Country that tries should wave goodbye to America.”
Additional tariffs threatened
It is not just the BRICS nations who have been the subject of tariff threats from Trump, with Mexico, Canada, and China also on the receiving end of such statements in recent days, as the Associated Press reports.
As a component of his work to reduce volumes of illegal immigration and drug trafficking, Trump vowed to impose a tariff of 25% on products entering into the U.S. from its neighbors to the north and south.
Another 10% tariff would be imposed on Chinese goods as well, according to Trump, a tax that would come in the form of an executive order issued almost immediately after he takes office.
The president-elect noted that the tariffs would stay put “until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!”
“Both Mexico and Canada have the absolute right and power to easily solve this long simmering problem. We hereby demand that they use this power, and until such time that they do, it is time for them to pay a very big price,” Trump added, taking the sort of firm stance he promised throughout his presidential campaign.
