House Ethics Panel Does Not Agree to Release Gaetz Report
When Matthew Gaetz was nominated to be Trump’s Attorney General, he immediately resigned his seat in Congress.
Gaetz told Speaker Johnson (R-LA) that he did so in order to allow Governor DeSantis to have his replacement by the time the next session of Congress started.
The timing was odd, however, as the House Ethics Committee was scheduled to vote on whether to release its probe into him.
Not Happening
Since Gaetz is no longer a House member, the committee has no jurisdiction, so many Republicans, including Speaker Johnson, wanted the report buried.
However, Democrats and a considerable number of Republicans thought the report should be given to the Senate Judiciary Committee that would be vetting Gaetz.
In one of my previous reports, I stated that I supported the release of the report to protect the Trump administration.
If the committee found something, it was going to come out sooner or later anyway, so I would rather have it come out sooner before Gaetz could hurt Trump.
The committee met this week to decide if it was going to release the report, with Chairman of the House Ethics Committee (R-MS) announcing, “There was not an agreement by the committee to release the report.”
The committee voted along party lines, without a single Republican on the committee voting to have the report released.
Of course, the point is moot now because Gaetz has withdrawn his nomination, citing that he felt like he was becoming a major distraction for Trump, and he did not want to delay the new AG taking his seat.
Something tells me this is not the last we will hear from Gaetz, as I believe Trump will find a home for him in a position that does not require Seante approval.
Gaetz could also go the private route and become a Fox News contributor.
