Former NFL Player Charged in J6 Case

Nearly four years after the riot at the Capitol, cases are still coming through the pipeline.

The latest being Leander Antwione Williams.

This week, Williams was arrested and charged with crimes related to the events that took place at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Got Him

Williams, who currently resides in Georgia, has been charged with “a felony offense of resisting, assaulting and impending law police officers.”

He was arrested in Savannah, GA, and his first court appearance will be in the Southern District of Georgia.

According to Capitol Police, Williams was among the first to breach the Capitol as well as having physically assaulted at least one law enforcement officer during the riot.

The filing stated that he “confronted and overpowered” perimeter law enforcement, then “allegedly lunged at an officer, swatting at the officer’s hand as the officer deployed spray to prevent the rioters from advancing.”

Williams also allegedly grabbed a barrier, and when police went to stop him, he “struck an officer on the head with a forceful arm motion.”

Williams was drafted in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions as a linebacker.

His rookie season, he played in 14 games, but only had 12 tackles, and he was waived by the Lions at the start of the 2017 season.

In consecutive years, he was signed by the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks, and the Carolina Panthers, but never made it off the practice squad.

He then took a shot at the XFL, signing with the DC Defenders, but he was waived in February 2020 from that team as well.

This is the kind of case that Trump will need to avoid if he does follow through with pardons for J6 defendants.

I don’t think he should have ever promised anything, but if he is going to give pardons, he needs to avoid any case that involved force used against an officer as well as anyone charged with sedition or insurrection.
