Recounter Ordered for PA Senate Race
Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has refused to concede his race even though it was called several days ago.
Casey has resorted to saying that his opponent, Dave McCormick, is disenfranchising voters by not waiting until all votes are counted.
Well, they have been counted, and Casey is still down by about 26,000 votes. Because of the tight margin, less than 0.5%, an automatic recount has been triggered.
Not Giving Up
I have never seen a recount flip an election with the margin of victory being this high.
Even so, Casey is holding firm that he will not concede the race until every ballot has been counted, and now that would include the recount.
Maddy McDaniel, a Casey spokesperson, explained, “The number of provisional ballots expected from areas that favor Senator Casey, like Philadelphia and its suburbs, is further proof that this race is too close to be called.
“As the McCormick campaign admitted in their own lawsuit this morning, the counting of these ballots could have an ‘impact on the outcome of the election.'
“With more than 100,000 ballots still left to count, we will continue to make sure Pennsylvanians’ voices are heard.”
McCormick has already declared victory after numerous outlets called the race, stating, “We knew on election night we had won, because the math was clear and there’s no way for Senator Casey to win.
“But Senator Casey is going to have to work through this, and so I wish him the best and his family the best and thank them for their service. But we’ve got to move on to changing the direction of the country.”
As I stated above, I do not suspect a recount will be successful, but the margin mandates that it take place.
If they somehow manage to find 30,000 votes to flip this election, you better believe the GOP will be calling foul at the top of their respective lungs.
The GOP currently holds a 53-47 advantage in the Senate. If this seat were to be flipped, that advantage would remain in place, but reduced down to 52-48.
