Jack Del Rio departing Wisconsin's staff after DUI arrest

After being detained near campus last week for operating a vehicle while intoxicated, former NFL head coach Jack Del Rio resigned from his position on Wisconsin's coaching staff on Monday, as The Daily Caller reported.

Del Rio, who previously served as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders, was named a senior adviser to Wisconsin's head coach, Luke Fickell, in August.

“I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the University of Wisconsin for the opportunity to work with such a talented coaching and support staff and some of the best young football players in the country,” Del Rio said in a statement.

“I have decided to step away from my position with the team, so they can focus all their attention on the remainder of the season.”

From Police

Following a collision with a stop sign, fence, and yard, Del Rio was apprehended by Madison police early Friday on charges of first offense operating while intoxicated.

Upon arrival at 12:35 a.m., police stated that Del Rio was exhibiting symptoms of impairment and was walking away from the scene.

“He’s going to move forward and he’s going to resign and move on,” Fickell said.

“It’s a tough situation. Decisions that all of us have to be able to take full responsibility for. So that’s what Jack will do, and we’ll continue to move forward.”

Coaching History

Del Rio, who is 61 years old, was the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders for the past four years before moving to Wisconsin. Twelve games into the 2023 season, he was let go.

During his 12-year head coaching career in the NFL, which included the 2003–2011 Jaguars season and the 2015–2017 Raiders season, Del Rio compiled a 93–94 record.

After an outstanding collegiate career at USC, he played linebacker for the NFL from 1985 to 1995.

On Saturday, the top-ranked Oregon Ducks will host Wisconsin, who is 5-4 with a 3-3 Big Ten record, in a battle that has seen the Badgers' recent winning streak
