Trump Backer and Donor Bernard Marcus Dead at 95
The Republican Party has lost a massive donor and Donald Trump has lost a major supporter.
Bernard Marcus, one of the founders of Home Depot, has passed away.
He was 95 years old.
He’s Really Gone
Marcus started Home Depot after having been fired from a corporate job.
The company was formed to give DIYers possibilities, including opening their own business.
It also served as a job hub of sorts, as the stores always have laborers waiting outside, hoping to grab some day work from contractors picking up supplies.
Home Depot announced his death online, posting, “The entire Home Depot family is deeply saddened by the death of our co-founder Bernie Marcus.
“We owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to Bernie.”
With most high-profile business owners caving to Democrats, Marcus always stood tall and supported Republicans, including Trump in 2016.
He even wrote an op-ed to explain his position, writing, “I genuinely believe that if we to started The Home Depot today, we would fail because of the hurdles government, especially the current administration, places in front of small business owners.”
While many other supporters bailed, Marcus continued to support Trump.
In 2024, he wrote an op-ed explaining his position again, stating, “For the first time in my 94 years on earth, I fear for the future of our democracy. … The world has also changed since 2020. It is much less safe … the different factions of the Republican Party must unite behind Trump.”
Arthur Blank, who co-founded Home Depot with Marcus nearly 50 years ago, stated that he was “heartbroken at the passing of my dearest friend” and that Marcus’ “tremendous commitment to so many causes will live on, as will the immeasurable impact on countless individuals and families who have been blessed by his giving heart.
“While this loss is profoundly painful, I am grateful for the close to 60 years we spent together, navigating challenges and celebrating successes, and I am honored to have been part of Bernie’s remarkable life.”
Rest in peace, sir, and thanks for staying true to the cause when everyone else bailed.
