Harris spills Democratic Party 'family secrets' in Michigan hot mic moment
As has been the case in several recent election cycles, the 2024 race has been marked by a notable gender gap between voters who support Donald Trump and those who favor Kamala Harris.
During a recent campaign stop in Michigan, the vice president -- perhaps inadvertently -- acknowledged as much when she was caught on a hot mic, spilling the Democratic Party's “family secrets” to the state's liberal governor, Gretchen Whitmer, as the New York Post reported.
Harris tells all
Following a rally event in Kalamazoo last Saturday, Harris and Whitmer kicked back for a beer and a chat at the Trak Houz Bar and Grill.
The appearance was clearly meant for the cameras, as numerous journalists -- equipped with video and sound paraphernalia -- were on hand for the proceedings.
After they were served their beverages of choice, the two political power players engaged in friendly banter during which Harris was heard saying, “We need to move ground among men,” referencing a support deficit among male voters.
It was then that the VP raised her head in what was portrayed as a surprise realization that her musings may have been recorded.
“Oh, we have microphones in here listening to everything. I didn't realize that. OK. So now you tell us. We just told all the family secrets. S**t,” Harris added, claiming unawareness of the situation, despite having a mic clipped to her clothing.
Democrats' dilemma
Despite Harris and Whitmer's attempt at humor, the challenged referenced by the vice president is all too real for Democrats when it comes to garnering a larger share of the male vote.
A number of recent polls revealed that while Harris was outpacing Trump when it comes to female voters, her struggles in terms of attracting the male segment of the electorate have persisted, as The Hill explained.
One prominent Democratic Party strategist told the outlet, “I don't think people understand what a big problem we have on our hands with men. Black men, Hispanic men, men in general.”
The insider added, “We can't simply say, 'Well, we have women.' Even if we win next month, we're going to have to ask ourselves some hard questions when this is over.”
With the election just days away, it remains to be seen whether Harris will have many any inroads when it comes to American men, but it seems unlikely that her theatrical drinking session with Whitmer won over very many at all.
