White House Accused of Altering Transcript to Protect Biden
One of the bigger stories of the week is Joe Biden calling Trump supporters “garbage.”
Now, in my eyes, Biden was pretty clear about what he said.
But, when the White House released the official transcript, it altered the wording to read “supporter’s,” and now it is being called out for the edit.
Wrong!
Biden was on a fundraising call when he commented on a comedian's joke at the MSG rally.
Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe likened Puerto Rico to a “floating island of garbage.”
Biden told his supporters, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporters." Yet, when the White House released the transcript, it stated, "The only garbage I see floating out there is his supporter’s."
White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates started the cleanup, claiming, "The president referred to the hateful rhetoric at the Madison Square Garden rally as ‘garbage.’"
Joe Biden also posted to X to try to clean up his mess, posting, "Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage—which is the only word I can think of to describe it.
"His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation."
House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik and House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer are accusing the White House of trying to cover up Biden’s comments.
In a joint letter, they stated, "In less than one week, the American people will determine the winner of the 2024 presidential election. They will choose between two candidates: President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. President Biden — marred by unpopular policies, scandal, and apparent cognitive deterioration — has chosen not to pursue a second term in office.
"President Biden, however, has continued to play a prominent role in Vice President Harris’s campaign and, indeed, is the most powerful mouthpiece for the Biden-Harris Administration’s policies and views that Ms. Harris presumably seeks to continue under a hypothetical Harris-Walz Administration."
They continued, "President Biden’s vindictive words were unsurprising, given his previous statements regarding people who choose not to vote for his preferred candidate. Unsurprising too were the White House’s actions after he said them."
They go on to say that instead of apologizing, the White House decided to simply “change” the comments, concluding, "The move is not only craven, but it also appears to be in violation of federal law, including the Presidential Records Act of 1978.
"White House staff cannot rewrite the words of the President of the United States to be more politically on message."
This was a massive error by Biden, only made more significant due to the mistake of trying to clean this up and spin it.
Trump took full advantage, showing up at a recent rally in a dump truck with a sanitation vest on.
This is the deplorable moment of the 2024 election cycle, and it may have just pushed Trump over the hump.
