Failed Assassination Attempt on Former Bolivian President, Car Riddled with Gunfire

A fascinating video has popped up on X of an alleged assassination attempt against the former president of Bolivia.

Former President Evo Morales was traveling in his car when the car suddenly swerved, almost out of control.

As the video comes back into focus, numerous bullet holes can be seen in the windshield of the vehicle.

While Morales was not injured, the driver was injured in both the head and the arm. It was not immediately clear whether that was from the shots fired.

Morales posted a statement on his Instagram profile blaming the current president, Luis Arce, for the alleged assassination attempt. He also added two of Arce’s government ministers as alleged accomplices.

Outlets have reached out to Arce for a comment on the allegations, but his office has not responded to requests for comment.

However, he did release a statement condemning political violence.

The statement on X read (via translator), “The exercise of any violent practice in politics must be condemned and clarified. Problems are not resolved by searching for the dead or by tendentious speculation.

“Therefore, in response to former President Evo Morales' complaint of an alleged attempt on his life, I have ordered an immediate and thorough investigation to clarify this incident.”

Morales resigned from office in 2019 amid allegations of election fraud. At the time, he claimed he was being forced from office and denied all allegations being made against him.

He initially fled to Mexico and was then given asylum in Argentina. Morales eventually returned home in 2020 and vowed to remain active in politics.

Recently, the situation in Bolivia has been a powder keg, with Morales’ supporters setting up blockades, creating massive shortages of critical supplies in the city.

In June, Gen. Juan Jose Zúñiga was arrested on charges of an attempted coup to oust Arce from office.
