Trump gets big support from 'mega-donors'

Former President Donald Trump's presidential campaign is getting a big boost from mega-donors.

This is according to a new report from the Daily Mail.

Per the outlet:

In a campaign that is shattering spending records, a handful of individuals are accounting for a massive splurge that is driving the ad spending voters are seeing on billboards and smartphones in battleground states.

As we will see, however, Trump's 2024 rival, Vice President Kamala Harris is reportedly winning the overall fundraising battle.

Mega-donors to the rescue

According to the Daily Mail, the mega-donors are trying to help offset some of the fundraising lead that Harris has on Trump.

The outlet reports:

Among them are billionaires who amassed fortunes in railroads, hedge funds, and shipping platforms. The five top mega-donors are all backing Republicans, with Donald Trump relying on their support to try to counter the edge Kamala Harris has garnered among individual contributors.

The Daily Mail reports that leading the list of mega-donors for Trump is Timothy Mellon.

The outlet writes:

Topping the list is Timothy Mellon, the grandson of leading financier and Pittsburgh native Andrew Mellon. He alone accounts for $172 million in campaign contributions, with $125 million going to the pro-Trump MAGA, Inc. He also gave $25 million to American Values 2024, which backs Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., who ended his independent campaign and threw his support to Trump.

Other mega-donors include Miriam Adelson, Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, Elon Musk, and more.

Harris has the edge

Fox News reports that, despite the help from mega-donors, it is actually Harris who is leading the way in the fundraising battle.

Fox reports:

The vice president entered the final full month of the campaign with a massive financial advantage over the former president, according to new federal fundraising filings late Sunday. The Harris campaign hauled in $221.8 million in September, according to the filings, more than triple the $63 million brought in by the Trump campaign last month.

The outlet hastens to add that "roughly a quarter of the money raked in by the vice president came during celebrity-studded fundraisers in Los Angeles and San Francisco at the end of last month."

Fox further reports that Harris, in addition to outraising Trump, is also outspending him.

Money, however, does not necessarily win elections. Fox notes:

This isn't the first time Trump's faced a fundraising deficit. He raised less than 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in his White House victory and Biden four years ago in his re-election defeat.
