Flashback: Malia Obama suffers parental embarrassment at White House on prom night
As Barron Trump can likely attest, the life of a child of the president of the United States is one full of scrutiny, security protocols, and unusual daily scenarios, and no first son or daughter is immune.
Malia Obama, the now-grown daughter of former President Barack and Michelle Obama, experienced what her mother later described as an “excruciating” prom night experience, all thanks to her famous parents, as the Inquisitr reports.
Prom night in DC
Upon the release of her 2018 memoir, Becoming, Michelle Obama set about recounting some of her family's most memorable moments at the White House.
One such incident took place on the night of daughter Malia's high school prom, back in 2015.
Clearly nervous about the big night, Malia implored her parents, “Just be cool please, OK” perhaps expressing concern about the nervousness likely to be experienced by her date, who had no choice but to submit to thorough security screening before making his way into the residence.
Unfortunately for Malia, as Michelle Obama recalled, her and Barack efforts at coolness, which entailed bare feet and flip-flops, respectively, the whole scenario ended up far more cringeworthy than intended.
“By my reckoning, we did manage to play it cool, though Malia still laughs, remembering it all as a bit excruciating,” the former first lady remembered amusingly.
Moving on
Fortunately, Malia and her sister Sasha do not appear to have been overly traumatized by the trials and tribulations of their tenure as first daughters, as both have gone on to become young adults leading highly independent lives.
As People reported earlier this year, Malia Obama, now 26, went on to graduate from Harvard University in 2021, subsequently making a name for herself in the film industry.
Sasha Obama, now 23, began her college career at the University of Michigan, later transferring to the University of Southern California, from which she graduated in 2023.
Both siblings now live together in Los Angeles, a fact that makes her parents extremely happy.
“It feels good to know that the two girls you raised find solace at a kitchen table with one another. It's like the one thing you want for them,” Michelle Obama mused, likely relieved that the prom night gaffes committed in an effort to be “cool” left no lingering scars, just laughs.
