Judge Rules Nebraska Felons Can Vote

There was a bit of a shock ruling coming out of Nebraska regarding voting rights only three weeks away from the election.

Nebraska’s Supreme Court has ruled that convicted felons can vote in the election.

There are now worries that this could be enough to tip the scales in favor of Harris, which would be a complete and utter disaster for Trump.

Cannot Strip Their Voting Rights

Now, I want to be clear… there are plenty of states where formerly convicted felons can vote.

If they have served their time, they can either vote immediately after getting out of prison or have their voting rights restored after a decided-upon period passes.

Republican Secretary of State Bob Evnen was trying to remove roughly 7,000 names from voter rolls on the premise they were felons, but the state’s high court overruled him.

Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman slammed Evnen and Attorney General Mike Hilgers in her opinion.

She wrote, “Patty and Selma at the Department of Motor Vehicles may not be constitutional scholars, but they know that they are expected to follow the law.

“Do we want to live in a world where every state employee who has a hunch a statute is flawed gets to ignore it?”

One of the men who is having his voting rights restored, Jeremy Jonak, was relieved after the decision was handed down.

He stated, “Over the years, so many of us have earned a second chance. We live in every part of the state, and the truth is most of us are just trying to live our lives and leave the past behind us.”

I am not sure why people are saying they are worried about the state going blue over this decision, as I just don’t see it happening.

The state has historically been a red state since 1976, with only seven Democrats having won the state since 1868.

In both 2008 and 2020, Democrats lost the state but did manage to get that one at-large electoral vote.

Regardless, the closest the state has been in recent history is 56.5% to 41.6% in 2008, which was Obama’s first election.

So, let’s not be too overly dramatic about the ruling because I do not believe it will impact the election any differently than we expected.
