Harris caught saying legal gun owners can have their homes searched

Vice President Kamala Harris once came out in support of allowing the police to search the homes of legal gun owners.

The point of the search, said Harris, was to make sure that the legal gun owners are being responsible with their firearms.

Harris was caught saying this to a group of reporters in May 2007, Fox News reports. The video has since been republished. Take a look:

 The details

At the time of this video, Harris was the district attorney of San Francisco, California. She, of course, would go on to become the state attorney general, before heading to the U.S. Senate and, now, the vice presidency.

The video is from a news conference that Harris participated in at the time. Fox reports that the press conference was to introduce "legislation that Harris helped draft, which sought to impose penalties for gun owners who fail to store their firearms properly at home."

There, she told reporters:

We're going to require responsible behaviors among everybody in the community, and just because you legally possess a gun in the sanctity of your locked home doesn't mean that we're not going to walk into that home and check to see if you're being responsible and safe in the way you conduct your affairs.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who republished the video, called it "openly totalitarian," adding, "if we don't resist this, we're done."

For those interested, the bill did end up becoming law. Fox reports, "It was bundled with other gun control provisions, including a new requirement for legal gun distributors to submit an inventory to the chief of police every six months, and a ban on possessing guns – even legally – in public housing."

Harris: "my values have not changed"

The vice president made this statement during an interview with CNN.

There, she tried to claim that, despite the fact she appears to be changing all of her policy stances to appear less radical to voters, her "values have not changed."

Presumably, this means that Harris still has the values that led to the extreme gun control measures she advocated for as the district attorney of San Francisco.

It also means that we probably shouldn't believe Harris when, for example, she recently claimed that because she is a gun owner should would not look to have to government take guns away from law-abiding citizens.

One would think that, if all Americans knew this about Harris, then there would be little chance of her becoming president.
