EU won't recognize 'democratic legitimacy' of Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro

America isn't the only place in the world where there are concerns about election security.

Election fraud is common all over the world, but we typically don't see it in countries as developed and free as America. One of the reasons Donald Trump and other conservatives push so hard for election security is so that we can avoid the type of situation that is happening in Venezuela right now.

European Union foreign ministers agreed on Aug. 29 that they were not going to recognize the "democratic legitimacy" of Venezuela's Nicolas Maduro following a heavily disputed election in his home country.

The announcement was first made by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borell.

"We cannot accept the legitimacy of Maduro as elected president," Borell recently said to reporters. "He will remain president, de facto ... But we deny democratic legitimacy based on a result that cannot be verified."

The decision was made after the European Union's 27 member countries met in Brussels.

Venezuela's electoral council has proclaimed Maduro the winner of the country's July 28 election but has refused to publish complete voting tallies.

The lack of transparency is a major reason why people are doubting the legitimacy of the man who's been in power in Venezuela since 2013.

Maduro's opposition has published tallies showing that its candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, won in a landslide.

Protests against the results have already resulted in at least 27 deaths.

Human rights group Foro Penal says that around 1,780 people are being held as political prisoners, including over 100 who aren't yet adults.

This type of corruption is what happens when the citizens are not 100% positive that their elections are secure. When there is any tampering, it can cause serious distress among the people who voted in the election.
