Trump's Election Interference Case Delayed

Judge Tanya Chutkan has pushed back Trump's election interference trial until September in response to a request from Special Counsel Jack Smith, a request that Donald Trump's lawyers declined to oppose, as the Daily Caller reports.

Smith's team claims that the government is still analyzing the U.S. Supreme Court’s presidential immunity ruling and the impact that decision will have on Smith's indictment against Trump.

A hearing was originally scheduled for Aug. 16, but Smith requested permission to file a proposed schedule for pretrial proceedings by the end of the month, which means that the case is on hold until at least September, if not longer.

The filing from Smith read, "Although those consultations are well underway, the Government has not finalized its position on the most appropriate schedule for the parties to brief issues related to the decision."

Hopes Fading for Democrats

Democrats have been counting on Smith to secure a conviction of Trump ahead of November, but the case against the former president has dragged out into a years-long nightmare that has little chance of ending anytime soon.

Trump's team has successfully fought to delay the trial at every turn to drag it out as long as possible. That strategy has been wildly successful and it's interesting to see Smith's team file for a delay for once.

The Supreme Court's decision that found that Trump has presidential immunity has kneecapped Smith's case badly, and part of the reason Smith wants time to review the case is because he may no longer have a case against Trump.

Trump has claimed for years that his actions were covered by presidential immunity, and many prosecutors knew that it would be a long shot to bring a case against him.

However, Democrats were desperate and willing to throw anything at Trump in an effort to stop him. Now that has left Smith high and dry as he has to find a way to continue his case or find an offramp from this disaster.

Trump made that appeal to presidential immunity all the way back in December of 2023 and then the ensuing appeals process ending at the Supreme Court ate up much of 2024.

Indictments Failed

The multiple indictments against Trump were designed to derail his return to politics but they actually fueled his rise as the indictments made it clear that the system was being weaponized against Trump.

The cases against Trump, including Smith's, were all seen as long-shot attempts that were using novel thinking and creative legal doctrines. But none of that mattered to Democrats as the aim was to slander and degrade Trump's image which they have had partial success with.

Trump's conviction in New York, thanks to a leftist judge and jury, has allowed Democrats to leverage the "felon" label against Trump.

However, all of these things have failed to kill Trump's political power as he is arguably more powerful than ever. As popular as Trump was in 2016, the energy around him has only grown due to the corruption of the system that Trump's indictments have revealed.
