Democratic Rep. Seth Moulton Weighs in on Biden's Cognitive State, Political Future

Rep. Seth Moulton has raised concerns about President Joe Biden's mental sharpness after a notable recent incident in which Biden seemingly failed to recognize him during an official gathering.

Moulton, citing multiple concerning incidents, has called for Biden to withdraw from the upcoming re-election campaign, doing so at the same time others are floating the possible use of the 25th Amendment to force his ouster, as the New York Post reports.

Initial Observations at Normandy's D-Day Anniversary

Last month, during the 80th anniversary of D-Day in France, Moulton experienced a troubling interaction with President Biden. Moulton noted that Biden, whom he considers a longtime mentor and friend, did not recognize him at a small event. This was surprising to Moulton, given their previously close relationship.

“More recently, I saw him in a small group at Normandy for the 80th anniversary of D-Day. For the first time, he didn’t seem to recognize me,” Moulton recounted in his op-ed for the Boston Globe.

Concerning Public Appearances Raise Doubts

Moulton linked his experience in Normandy to Biden's overall recent performances, highlighting a particularly “disastrous” debate against former President Donald Trump on June 27. Moulton's concerns are not isolated, as Biden appeared disoriented at several other recent public events.

During the public D-Day commemoration, Biden struggled with his surroundings, appearing lost and awkwardly searching for a chair while others stood. This moment, captured on camera, was widely circulated on social media platforms.

Additional Incidents at International Events

Biden's trip to the G7 summit in Italy shortly after the D-Day event further compounded concerns about his mental fitness. Diplomatic insiders and senior European officials observed Biden losing focus and seeming “out of it” during critical discussions, something which was shocking to many European allies.

A clip of Biden looking perplexed after shaking hands with French President Emmanuel Macron gained significant attention, reinforcing perceptions of his diminishing sharpness.

Internal Concerns Within the Democratic Party

Rep. Moulton is among a growing group of House Democrats who have publicly suggested that Biden should not seek re-election, reflecting a broader concern within the party. Approximately 30 Democrats in the lower chamber share Moulton’s reservations about Biden's candidacy in the next election.

High-profile figures like former President Barack Obama, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have reportedly also expressed doubts about Biden's potential to succeed against Trump in a forthcoming election.

Public and Private Reactions to Biden’s Campaign

Despite the growing concerns expressed by figures within his own party, President Biden has reaffirmed his intention to continue his campaign, despite the worries raised by Moulton. “The president should bow out of the race,” Moulton insisted in his op-ed, reflecting a sentiment that questions the viability of Biden's candidacy due to concerns over his mental acuity.

“The harsh reality is that all the characteristics that have made Biden an irrepressible force -- the energy, the vitality, the sharp, scrappy wit -- are flickering,” Moulton observed, pointing out a noticeable decline in Biden's characteristic vigor.

Summary of Democratic Concerns

In conclusion, the incidents observed by Rep. Seth Moulton and others have sparked a significant debate within the Democratic Party about President Biden's fitness for office and his re-election prospects.

The accumulation of public missteps, internal party concerns, and Biden's steadfast determination to run poses a complex challenge for the party as they approach the next election cycle.
