State Reps Demand Congresswoman Resign Over Trump's Secret Service Protection Action

Despite much of the nation unifying behind the call to condemn violence following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, some of the lawmakers whose battle cry has been to lean on a violent response to disagreements have been suffering a difficult, even karma-inducing, few days.

Among those is a Texas Democrat who has pushed for the removal of Trump's Secret Service detail, causing an uproar from some of her political colleagues, as The Daily Caller reported.

Democratic Texas Representative Jasmine Crocket is being called upon to resign by a number of lawmakers over her bill to revoke his Secret Service protection.

Reasons for the call...

In a letter that was issued to the congresswoman on Monday, 27 Texas lawmakers and candidates for office demanded that Crockett resign from her position.

The reason for this request was that Crockett had co-sponsored a bill in April that would have removed Trump's security detail from the Secret Service.

In the House of Representatives, House Resolution 8081, also known as the Denying Infinite Security and Government Resources Allocated toward Convicted and Extremely Dishonorable Former Protectees Act, Crockett was one of eight Democrats who sponsored the bill.

Following Trump's conviction in a court in New York in April, the measure was drafted with the intention of terminating the presidential protection detail for any individual who is sentenced for a federal or state felony that is punishable by a minimum of one year in prison.

From the Letter

“Texans believe that, regardless of party, Presidents of the United States of America, both current and former, must be protected," the letter stated, going on to outline the obvious danger that former presidents face in today's heated political climate.

"Considering Saturday’s assassination attempt on President Trump, which resulted in him being literally shot in the ear and in other innocent Americans being killed or injured, and, since you, just three months ago, sponsored legislation (HR 8081) to remove his Secret Service protective detail, we, the undersigned current and future members of the Texas Legislature, call on you to immediately resign your position in Congress.

The letter sent to Crocket was a sharp rebuke of her personal representation of the values of the Lone Star state:

"You have forfeited any moral authority to represent the State of Texas,” the state legislators wrote in the letter obtained by the Daily Caller.

The Attack on Trump

The former president was injured in the ear by a gunshot fired from approximately 150 yards away. This came after the Secret Service and local police were unable to apprehend and subdue the assassin before he could fire multiple shots at Trump.

A 20-year-old from Pennsylvania named Thomas Matthew Crooks has been apprehended; the reasons behind his actions remain unclear.
