Billy Joel comes to the defense of Justin Timberlake following DUI arrest

Billy Joel, the "Piano Man," just came to the defense of singer Justin Timberlake.

Joel did so, according to the local outlet Pix 11, following Timberlake's recent arrest for driving under the influence.

The outlet reports that Joel "was eating at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, the same East End town where Timberlake was arrested earlier Tuesday morning," when he was asked to comment upon Timberlake's arrest.

"I don't really know him that much, so I have no comment. Judge not lest ye be judged," Joel said.

Background

The incident that led to Timberlake's arrest, according to NBC New York 4, took place early on Tuesday morning in Long Island, New York.

The outlet reports:

An officer observed the grey BMW with Florida license plates that Timberlake had been driving as it twice failed to stay on the right side of the road shortly before 1 a.m. Tuesday in Sag Harbor, according to the criminal complaint. He also allegedly failed to stop at the stop sign on Madison Street at Jermain Avenue, before having trouble staying on his side of the road.

It was the swerving that caused the officer to decide to pull Timberlake over, and, when he did so, the officer claimed that Timberlake appeared drunk.

NBC 4 continues:

The cop who stopped him said the so-dubbed "Prince of Pop" appeared to be drunk, with bloodshot, glassy eyes, and a strong smell of alcohol on his breath. The complaint says Timberlake was unsteady and had slowed speech; he also allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests. They said he couldn't focus on speaking to police while he was looking for his registration, either.

The officer proceeded to arrest him and to take him to the Sag Village Police Department for processing. There, Timberlake refused to take a blood alcohol content chemical test. Then, Timberlake was taken to the East Hampton Town police headquarters, where he was held until his arraignment later that morning.

Get ready for a "vigorous defense"

Timberlake's attorney, Edward Burke Jr., has released some short public statements on behalf of his client. In one, Burke said that he plans to mount a "vigorous" defense on behalf of Timberlake.

"I look forward to vigorously defending Mr. Timberlake on these allegations," he said.

Other than that, Burke has only said, "I will have a lot to say at the appropriate time but am currently awaiting full discovery from the District Attorney’s office."

Timberlake, himself, has not released a public statement on the matter.

But, he is reported to have told the officer who pulled him over the following, "I had one martini and I followed my friends home." We will have to see if this is the defense that Burke goes with.
