GOP House Members Push Tip Exemption Legislation for Trump

Last week, Donald Trump held a rally in Nevada where he made a big promise.

Trump told hospitality workers that if he is elected president, he will have Congress pass a law that would not tax their tips.

Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Thomas Massie (R-KY) then immediately began crafting legislation to do just that.

Will It Pass?

So, here’s the thing…

In order for Trump to pass such a law, it would have to pass both chambers of Congress, which means the GOP would need to control both chambers to get it to his desk.

Obviously, Massie and Gaetz know this, and even though Democrats still own the Senate, they are proposing to floor legislation that would deliver on Trump’s promise.

Gaetz stated, “As the cost of living continues to rise, the hardworking men and women in the service industry, many of whom may be working a second job to make ends meet, must be allowed to keep every dollar of tip money they earn.

“I am proud to join with Rep. Thomas Massie in co-leading this important tax-relief legislation.”

Massie added, “Ron Paul had it right and so does Donald Trump.

“Taxing tips is regressive and goes against American tradition.

“But now digital payments allow the government to tax every transaction, even those that historically have not been taxed.

“With inflation raging, it only makes sense to eliminate the tax on tips and provide relief to working folks.”

While I really have no problem with the legislation, the bill will never pass, so this is nothing more than statement legislation for Massie and Gaetz to suck up to Trump… all at the cost of the American taxpayer.

Senator JD Vance (R-OH) just called out Senator Schumer (D-N.Y.) for doing something similar in the Senate with bump stock banning legislation, yet here are two members of the GOP doing the same thing in the House.

This gets Massie and Gaetz headlines, but it literally does nothing for the American people because even if it does get past Schumer in the Senate, there is no way that Joe Biden will ever sign such a piece of legislation.

My best guess is that they are doing this to hand Trump a victory for his campaign, and then they can rail against Democrats for not passing it through.

If it helps get Trump elected, I guess it serves a purpose, but that is exactly what this is… a campaign stunt.
