Alex Jones Ordered to Liquidate Assets to Pay Judgments
For years, Alex Jones made outlandish claims on his show, “InfoWars.”
Jones loved to make controversial statements to stir up the news cycle, including doubting the authenticity of the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting where 20 children and six adults died.
Family members of those victims have collectively won $1.5 billion in lawsuits for defamation, which Jones apparently thought he would never be forced to pay.
Liquidate
I don’t have a problem with people who raise legitimate conspiracy theory angles, such as multiple shooters in the Kennedy assassination.
I don’t have an issue with someone who has a contrarian opinion to mine.
But Jones took things way too far sometimes, knowing what he was saying was false and doing it only to create a buzz about his platform.
After the Sandy Hook shooting took place, Jones took the stance that the shooting was "completely fake" and a "giant hoax" that was conducted by those who opposed the Second Amendment.
Jones had nothing to back up his claims, but the real problem was that people who watched his show or listened to his podcast believed him.
I cannot tell you how many times I personally had arguments with people who doubted that the Sandy Hook shootings were real.
The result of this was numerous suits filed against Jones, and he lost every single one of them.
After he lost the cases, Jones seemed to believe that the verdicts were so far over his personal wealth that he would never have to pay them… but he was wrong.
Jones filed for bankruptcy in 2022, with a decision finally coming down from Judge Christopher Lopez, who just ordered all of Jones’ assets liquidated in an effort to pay something to the winners of these suits.
That would include Jones’ $2.8 million Texas ranch.
The only real asset that Judge Lopez did not include in the liquidation was Free Speech Systems, which is the parent company of InfoWars.
My guess is that the judge wants to keep this operational as a way to continue to pay against the judgment, as Free Speech Systems generates millions in income every month.
An attorney for some of the families stated, “The court authorized us to move immediately to collect against all Infowars assets, and we intend to do exactly that.
“Alex Jones is neither a martyr nor a victim. He is the perpetrator of the worst defamation in American history.”
People often seem to confuse free speech rights with accountability.
The First Amendment only guarantees your right to say what you want, but you are still held accountable for those words.
Jones was just held accountable, and while it may not be popular with everyone reading this, I am glad he is being held accountable in this case.
