Horror struck in China this week when a roof collapsed on a local gym.
At the time of the collapse, a middle school girls' volleyball team was conducting practice, reported the Daily Caller.
CNN reported that 11 of the 19 people that were in the gym at the time of the collapse died.
Not Random
Of the 19 people that were in the gym, 17 of them were students and two were coaches. Officials did not release the names of any victims, but local parents told outlets that their daughters were in the gym, with the girls being between 15 and 16 years old.
Officials believe the collapse may have been initiated by local construction workers that had left materials behind.
The workers were doing work on a neighboring building, but there had been significant rainfall in recent days. The theory is that the rain weighed down the materials and caused the roof to collapse.
Parents were obviously fuming over the incident, having lost their children needlessly.
One father stated, "They tell me my daughter is gone but we never got to see the child. All the children had their faces covered with mud and blood when they were sent to the hospital. I pleaded, please let me identify the child. What if that wasn't my child?"
The accident has brought to light lax safety supervision in the industry, with officials vowing changes immediately. Officials discussed putting a "2023 special action plan" to address these concerns so nothing like this happens again.
Officials stated, "We will reflect deeply and learn lessons and comprehensively and deeply carry out the ’2023 special action plan' for investigating and rectifying major safety hazards."
That sounds great, but that will not bring these girls back, and now there are almost a dozen families who are in mourning simply because a bunch of construction workers were being lazy and either did not remove properly or cover their construction materials.
