Death Toll Reaches 4 in Charlotte Shooting
Thursday afternoon, the entire country was saddened to learn of the deaths of several law enforcement officers in Charlotte.
Initially, it was reported that three officers had been killed, but that total was updated to four by Thursday morning.
Additionally, four other officers were wounded.
Bad Day
The U. S. Marshals Task Force was attempting to serve a warrant when everything went sideways.
They were attempting to serve 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr. on felony firearm possession.
Hughes apparently opened fire on the officers, killing four of them, and wounding another four. There may have also been more than one shooter based on the statements by authorities after the fact.
Hughes was shot and killed during the shootout with the authorities.
The four dead officers have been identified as Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks, Investigator William "Alden" Elliott, Police Officer Joshua Eyer, and Investigator Samuel "Sam" Poloche.
Three CMPD officers and a U.S. Marshals Task Force officer were wounded during the shootout.
After the shooting, Police Chief Johnny Jennings stated, "We have two people of interest at the police station that are being questioned right now.
"And we have confirmed that the individual that was set up that we were serving the warrant on was the individual who fired the initial shots and was deceased in the front yard at the end of all of this."
Jennings later added, "I've been with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for 32 years. I can't remember an incident where three law enforcement officers were [injured] and also three that were killed in the same incident.”
These are some of the most dangerous assignments for officers along with traffic stops and domestic disputes.
Over the last two years, more than 150 officers have been killed in the line of duty, usually taken by surprise during an arrest or an ambush.
Yet, we have Democrats in office who want to coddle criminals and chastise our heroes wearing the badge.
